Situated just outside the historic town of Óbidos, now declared a national monument, and approximately 45 minutes north west of Lisbon on Portugal’s Silver Coast.
GENERAL DESCRIPTIONCasa d’Óbidos is a traditional Portuguese Manor House set in its own extensive and well-tended grounds and dates back to the 19th century. It sits proudly and peacefully beneath the famous walled, medieval town of Óbidos, a picturesque old citadel, conquered from the Moors in 1148, full of interesting corners and alleys and often considered the jewel in Portugal’s crown. Large windows and high ceilings give this impressive guest house the atmosphere of a typical grand old mansion. Magnificent and privileged views of the pretty picture postcard town can be enjoyed from nearly all windows of the house.
THE OWNERSFernando Sarmento and his wife bought the property in 2000 when it was in great need of some love and attention. After much work and a great deal of devotion, Mr and Mrs Sarmento succeeded in restoring this neglected 19th century house to its former glory.
Mrs Sarmento’s tasteful selection of fabrics, drapes, antiques and artefacts; her careful placing of an occasional family photograph and her use of traditional hand-painted tiles by local craftsmen all contribute to a special ambience of elegance and comfort throughout the house.
Fernando is clearly and justifiably very proud of his beautiful guest house and will happily show you photos of the house when he first bought it and of the different stages in its development to the present day.
Guests are made to feel very welcome in this charming family home.
The Manor House:
The house offers guests six tastefully decorated bedrooms with private bathrooms. There is a cosy, comfortable lounge in which guests can relax with a newspaper or a good book after a busy day sightseeing and a rather grand dining room with a fireplace where breakfast is served. There is also a snooker table and TV for guests to enjoy.
A cool, shady terrace runs the length of the house overlooking the pool where guests may be able to take breakfast on a warm Summer’s morning or a refreshing drink while enjoying a good book or the splendid view up to the castle. A dip in the pool may also be a welcome activity at the end of a hot day of sightseeing.
Self-Catering Accommodation:
There are also four well appointed self-catering apartments only a few paces from the main house for families or guests who prefer a little more privacy and independence. Three of these apartments have been cleverly converted from an 18th century cottage in the grounds and the other has been converted from an old barn or storage building.
All independent apartments have been very carefully designed giving the atmosphere of a real home. They each have a traditional and rustic feel with original exposed wooden beams and floorboards, but like the main house, are tastefully decorated and furnished with a careful blend of antique pieces, dark wood furniture, comfy sofas, large rugs and elegant fabrics and lamps. The apartments are all named after members of the Sarmento family.
Casa Leonor: (sleeps 2)
This is the barn/storage building conversion and is located on the ground floor. It has a real cottage feel and offers a double bedroom with bathroom, a spare bed up in the mezzanine, a living room and a kitchenette.
Casa Teresinha: (sleeps 2)
This comfortable apartment has a really rustic ambience, and consists of a bedroom with double bed, bathroom, kitchenette and living room.
Casa Matilde: (sleeps 4)
This is set on the ground floor of the converted cottage and is divided into two bedrooms, each with its own private bathroom, a living room, a fully equipped kitchen and a private lawn with flower beds and a barbecue.
Casa Cristina: (sleeps 6)
This is set on the first floor of the converted cottage and offers three bedrooms, each with their own private bathroom, a living room and a fully equipped kitchen.
The Garden:
Within the grounds, there is a beautiful swimming pool, a tennis court, extensive lawns, gardens and orchards all at your disposal. A very short walk through the garden and grounds leads you to the impressive Church of ‘Senhor Jesus da Pedra’ (‘Our Lord of the Stone’), near to which there are several good restaurants serving typical Portuguese cuisine.
PAYMENT CONDITIONS
Payments can be made by Visa or Mastercard, by Portuguese debit card (Multibanco), by cheque in Euros or in cash.
