LOCATION

Hotel situated in the centre of Vila Viçosa in the eastern Alentejo, approximately 50 kms from Evora to the east and from Badajoz (Spain) to the west.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Solar dos Mascarenhas was built in the second half of the 16th Century by Pedro de Mascarenhas, who was a courtier at the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança in Vila Viçosa, and it remained in the Mascarenhas family until 1883, after which it changed hands several times.

Behind the immaculate white façade with its sculpted coat of arms of the Mascarenhas family, visitors arrive in the reception area where the juxtaposition of old and new, traditional and modern, is immediately apparent. Much of the original building has been preserved and been given a fresh look by the use of a palette of strong colours in the minimalist fittings – black, red, grey and purple contrast with the white of the walls, natural stone, marble and wood.

This colour scheme provides a bridge and harmonises the contrast between the historic Solar building and the two new purpose-built wings where the guest accommodation is located, in what was formerly the garden. A new garden has now been created between the guest wings, with lawn and orange trees reminiscent of those which line the streets of Vila Viçosa. There is also a spacious patio paved in local marble, a terrace, solarium and swimming pool.

THE OWNERS

Your hosts at Solar dos Mascarenhas are a charming team of mother and daughter. When Dª Alice bought the property it was not initially her intention to embark on such an ambitious project, but since her daughter Tania was already studying in the area of hotel management it turned out to be the perfect combination. Dª Alice’s knowledge and experience in the world of antiques is reflected in the many antique objects which form part of the decoration, whilst Tania’s friendly and enthusiastic approach ensures that guests feel at ease in this charming hotel, where all the staff are very friendly and welcoming.

GUEST FACILITIES

The hotel has a total of 18 double rooms and 4 suites, all with full bathroom, hairdryer, flat screen TV, air conditioning, internet access and direct dial phones. The décor is modern and striking, and the result is both functional and comfortable. There are also rooms available for guests with reduced mobility.

The restaurant “Do Paço” serves both lunch and dinner, concentrating on using fresh local produce and traditional cuisine. Breakfast is also served in the restaurant.

The hotel also has a spacious and airy bar which opens on to the patio and pool area, offering a variety of drinks and snacks.

In the main Solar building there is a comfortable lounge with TV, games table and a variety of books and games.

PAYMENT CONDITIONS

A deposit of 25% is required to secure a reservation, the balance being payable on check-out.

VISA and Mastercard accepted.

All payments are made directly to the hotel.

CANCELLATION POLICY

For cancellations with less than 48 hours notice, or no-show, the hotel will keep the deposit.
